Sonny Thompson fiel mir zuerst als Pianist von The Swallows: Roll Roll Pretty Baby, 1951, auf. Einige Nachforschungen ergaben, daß er auf zahlreichen R&B Aufnahmen der 40-er und 50-er vertreten ist und zeitweise recht erfolgreich eine eigene Band leitete. Er trat sogar noch in den 70-ern auf.
Seine Schallplattenkarriere begann Thompson bei Sultan 1946. Es folgten Aufnahmen für Miracle, King, Federal und Deluxe. Er begleitete Lula Reed, The Swallows, The Midnighters, Billy Stewart, James Brown, Jesse Johnson, Freddie King, Wynonie Harris, Little Milton, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, Luther "Georgia Boy Snake" Johnson, Mabel Scott, Jimmy Dawkins, Pilgrim Jubilee Singers, Howlin' Wolf, The Five Keys, Lucky Millinder.
Shapiro – Bernstein verklagte im Januar 1950 Miracle Records wegen Copyright-Verletzungen von Yancey Special durch Lone Gone, einem Sonny Thompson Hit. Das Chicagoer Gericht fand nur Übereinstimmung in den Bass-Linien der beiden Kompositionen und sprach Miracle Records frei.

Er arbeitete hauptsächlich als R&B Session Musiker. 1959 wurde er als Nachfolger von Ralph Bass A&R director für King Records in Chicago. Nachdem King 1964 dicht machte, nahm Thompson wieder die Sessionarbeit auf und tourte gelegentlich in Europe.

Es ist mir nicht bekannt, aber anzunehmen, ob Thompson auch auf den anderen Aufnahmen der Royals für Federal (ab 1952, später unter dem Namen The Midnighters, ab 1959 auf dem King Label) das Klavier spielte. Die Royals nannten sich ab 1954 The Midnighters, um sich von The Five Royals zu unterscheiden.
