Bewertungen in Record-Guides sollte man nicht zu ernst nehmen. Jede Einstufung ist subjektiv, jeder hat andere Ansprüche. Doch nur drei Sterne für Eric Dolphy At The Five Spot Vol. 1 und gar nur 2,5 für Vol. 2 im The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD (

Literatur) sind unbegreiflich. Ich habe mir ein paar Gründe für diese relativ schwache Bewertung zurechtgelegt, aber es ist müßig, sie hier zu erörtern. Beide Alben (CDs) sind schlicht eine Wucht. Dolphy, Booker Little und Waldron sind phantastisch (Waldron meistert das verstimmte Klavier); Davis und Blackwell sind zumindest auf Augenhöhe.
Booker Little starb wenige Monate später im Oktober 1961, Dolphy ebenfalls viel zu früh am 29. Juni 1964 in Berlin.
