Im Sammelband Knowledge and Reality sind dreizehn Essays zu Ehren von Alvin Plantinga anlässlich seines 70. Geburtstages (die Herausgabe verzögerte sich) vereint. Plantingas Arbeitsfelder waren und sind die Religionsphilosophie, Metaphysik und Erkenntnistheorie. Die dreizehn Essays konzentrieren sich auf die beiden letzten Arbeitsfelder, siehe crisp Inhaltsverzeichnis. Sie sind nicht als Einführungen in diese Gebiete gedacht, sondern setzen eine Kenntnis der jeweiligen philosophischen Diskussion voraus. Auf die folgenden drei Essays habe ich mich besonders gestürzt: Peter van Inwagen: "Properties"; William P. Alston: "Epistemology and Metaphysics"; Jonathan Kvanvig: "Scientific Naturalism and the Value of Knowledge". Van Inwagen greift die Jahrhunderte währende Diskussion um Platonismus und Nominalismus auf. Alston betont, dass die fundamentalen epistemologischen Prinzipien immer schon metaphysische voraussetzen. Und Kvanvig beleuchtet, wie trotz Naturalismus für den Wert des Wissens plädiert werden kann. Alle Essays werden weit über Plantingas kommende Geburtstage hinaus zu Rate gezogen werden.
Für einen Sammelband ungewöhnlich aber hoch willkommen ist ein Personenindex zum Abschluss.
Wer sich für Metaphysik und Erkenntnistheorie an der vordersten Linie des akademischen Diskurses interessiert und die entsprechenden Vorkenntnisse mitbringt, findet hier ein breites Feld hervorragender, inspirierender Artikel.
Alvin Plantinga, * 15. November 1932 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, ist Theologe und ein führender Vertreter der analytischen Religionsphilosophie. Seit The Nature of Necessity, 1974, zählt Plantinga auch zum anerkannten Fachmann für Metapyhsik und Epistemologie.

Knowledge and Reality is an anthology of thirteen essays in honor of Alvin Plantinga. Intended for his 70th birthday the edition was released a little late in 2006. Plantinga is most famous for his works on philosophy of religion, metaphysics, and epistemology. These essays cover mainly metaphysics and epistemology, see the crisp table of contents.
The reader should not expect introductions to any of these areas of research, all essays presuppose to know very well the current philosophical discussion.
I for myself appreciated the most Peter van Inwagen: "Properties"; William P. Alston: "Epistemology and Metaphysics" and Jonathan Kvanvig: "Scientific Naturalism and the Value of Knowledge". Van Inwagen gives new insights in the longtime discussion about platonism and nominalism. Alston emphasizes that the fundamental epistemological principles already assume certain metaphysical principles. And Kvanvig shows how a naturalist point of view can nevertheless account for the value of knowledge.
All these essays will be read and discussed long after Plantinga's upcoming birthdays.
To everyone, who is interested in metaphysics and epistemology on an academic level Knowledge and Reality is highly recommended.
